Dear Gordon: -

I have just got through reading yesterdays Globe. There does not seem to be too much news in it about the war - nothing doing yet likely for some time. In one of the American papers this morning it was stated that Von Hindenberg is to be moved to the Western front & there will likely soon be something doing.

There is a larger number of guests at the Sanitarium just now. They keep coming and leaving. A Mr. Emerson from St. John's N. B. whom I met last year left the other day. His place was taken at our table this morning by a Priest from Rochester. The is a Mr McCuaig here from Montreal - a broker. His son is lieutenant with the first contingent. Mr McCuaig is suffering from nervous frustration. His business has worried him a great deal the last two years. He had been a banker and was manager in Quebec City when he gave up banking for brokerage. He made a good deal of money but from what he says I think he feels he would be better off now if he had stuck to the bank. I think it is a good thing for you and Edward that this reachin and stingency has come on now just as you are making a beginning in life. Such conditions may occur at any time and one should not plan and live as if prosperity were to be always unbroken. I hope you will keep in view the end of this war and your period of military service. It may be short or long. No one can tell what conditions will exist after the war is over but a little capital will be of great advantage in whether times are to be hard or prosperous. I hope Brock is better by this time. Probably the drill has been a little too strenuous for him. If one can stand it it ought build up his physique and be of value for years afterwards. It will probably be a good thing for you that you have got away from the desk for awhile into the open and into physical exercise. The best period of the year is coming and I am sure you will enjoy the outside life. I expect to be here until next Monday and then home to work again.

With love -
Father.
